FRIGO. By Eric Ambler. Atheneum. 311 pages. $8.95.
Eric Ambler's 15th novel is one of his best. For 40 years, he has been constructing stothat seem so real they just might be true. "Dr. Frigo" is no exception. Ernesto Castillo, a doctor in a hospital on a French Antilles island.
is called "Frigo" by because he is remote coworkers and cold. But he is good at his job, has a solid relationship with his mistress and enjoys photography, his hobby. Castillo is also the son of a Latin American dictator who was assassinated by unknown opponents. Many of his father's friends see him as a political heir, a force to reckon with in home country politics. Then to the island comes a political leader from Castillo's past.
French secret police send the doctor as personal physician to him during the state visit. Politically and morally, Dr. Frigo must face up to himself and his future. Should he revenge his father? Get involved in politics or continue in medicine? He is manipulated into a destiny he never dreamed of comrades murdered. governments overthrown, morality twisted and turned.
Ambler needs no science fiction gimmicks to make his novels exciting. His characters are solid and intriguing and his writing masterful. "Dr. Frigo" is no espionage frivolity, a thoroughly engrossing novel. Eve Sharbutt Associated Press Rushville News Notes By Mrs.
George Oren DONAHUES TRAVEL RUSHVILLE Mr. and Mrs. Dan Donahue. children Pam and Danny, have returned from a day vacation spent in California and Hawaii. Leaving Ohio by plane, the first leg of the journey extended to California where a day and a night were spent in Disneyland.
Across the Pacific to Honolulu, the vacationers made the Waikiki Beachcomber Hotel headquarters for a week. Special projects were planned, various kinds of island, entertainment, food, and customs being observed. An outstanding feature of the vacation was a boat trip from Honolulu to Pearl Harbor. Each day the tourists were in Hawaii, rain occurred for a short period and they learned that the frequent rains allow for the tropical vegetation to retain its beauty. On Sunday the family attended the First Baptist Church and found it very similar to their home church in its service.
The congregation was evenly divided between people of the white race people of the mixed Hawaiian culture. AT DEFENBAUGHS Mr. and Danny Defenbaugh, Alexandria, were recent vistors in the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Defenbaugh and brother David.
They made the trip primarily to reassure themselves that the elder Defenbaugh had truly recovered from the sudden illness which caused his hospitalization for a few days. On Saturday, the group enjoyed dinner at home, together with Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Garrett, local residents and Mrs. Carrie Bloom, Lancaster.
The same group was entertained on Sunday in the Garrett home. Mrs. Dewey Fisher, Thurston spent last Tuesday with a distant cousin, Mrs. Owen Foster of the Rushville community. In the afternoon, the twosome drove over to see Mrs.

Convention Center Plans For Columbus COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) Battelle Memorial Institute officials met Tuesday to begin planning a nonprofit corporation to build a Columbus Convention Center. The Battelle Commons Co. for Community Urban Redevelopment would receive $36.5 million from the institute to build and operate the convention center and to funnel profits from the center to charities. Pleas Franklin Court Judge County William Common T.
Gillie ruled Monday that a nonprofit corporation to build a convention center with the Battelle gift is proper under the terms of the will of Battelle's founder, Gordon Battelle. The City of Columbus may have to spend up to $35 million for improved roads, street lights, sewers and other capital improvements in the Union Depot area to go with the proposed gift convention center, according to Columbus Service Director Richard Jackson.
